How to get that V-shaped faceby Diana A. Uy

It is a fact that Asians have always been concerned about their naturally round-shaped faces. No less than international singing sensation Charice made that clear when, prior to her TV guesting for US TV series Glee, she underwent a thermage and botox procedure to make her face look slimmer, shocking her fans, including godmother Oprah Winfrey.

Jason Au, regional trainer for Clarins Asia, says that our concept of beauty from the outset has always been heavily influenced by world standards characterized by those with Hellenic features: Heart-shaped faces with high cheekbones, big eyes and small chins. Not to mention, photographers, fashion experts and other industry professionals have always gravitated towards these Barbie dolls whenever they go on casting for models and muses, promoting more insecurity to the already dejected girls.

“This is because those with more structured faces look better on pictures in every angle because of their facial contours. Also in pictures we tend to look bigger than our normal size as such the need for a lot slimmer models,” said Au.

Au, who has been in the beauty business for more than 10 years and currently Clarins Asia’s top makeup artist, added however that while it will be a long time before we can completely embrace an all-new, radical view of beauty, that “facial” problem (if we can call it a problem at all) is something that is reparable.

The metrosexual beauty maven waxed scientific explaining that like our Caucasian counterparts, Asian women have five fatty pockets in the face only ours are more pronounced and aggravated further by those so-called “toxins” (read: excess water and fats) thus, the “heaviness” of the face.

“Fashion and beauty aside, excess accumulation of fats and water puffs up the face, making it look bigger. Sometimes a round chin is caused by excess water retention,” explained Au.

Au said having a rounder face caused by these fatty deposits is not necessarily a bad thing because it lets Asian women to enjoy firmer and younger-looking skin in the long run. Our skin in fact will age less slowly than our Western girlfriends. In sum, it all boils down to managing these fatty pockets without having to go under the knife.

How? As simple as “detoxing” achieved thru regular exercise, drinking lots of water, eating the right food (avoid too much salty food), and applying the right skin products especially when we are not drinking enough water or exercising as much can do wonders to the ballooning problem we face.

One of the products Au recommended is the newly developed Clarins Shaping Facial Lift Lipo-drain serum, exclusively designed for Asian women and currently the number 1 selling product at Clarins. The Shaping Facial lift works by clearing away excess fat, water and other skin impurities stored in the face.

“We like to call it the ‘inner deeper skin sewage cleaner’ or sewage cleaner,” supplied Au. “The Clarins Shaping Facial Lift is designed to be a ‘draining’ product so that you’ll have a slimmer, structured, more refined face by removing away the excess fat and water [and consequently] enhancing [the effectiveness] of skin products three times. Clarins promises a 14.7 percent reduction [of fatty deposits] in four weeks with regular use.”

Clarins Shaping Facial Lift was initially launched in 1998, introducing Asian women to a safer and more natural way to getting that coveted V-shaped face. Needless to say, it was an instant hit, prompting the beauty institute to dedicate more research into the cleansing product to further improve or enhance its active ingredients. This year, Clarins Shaping Facial Lift has been reformulated to make it more effective thanks to the addition of three more natural power drainers: blue button flower for eliminating fats; horse chestnut for draining puffiness; and baccharin for defining facial contours.

The new and improved cleansing product should be used right after cleansing the face and before using other skin-care products. To have better results, Au suggested doing the “Clarins Manual Auto-Lifting” method after applying the product. One is only required the use of their palms with elbows resting on the thighs while sitting down. The steps are as follows:

Step 1. Front: Place your forehead in your palms, gently massaging it to smooth the appearance of lines

Step 2. Eyes: Place the heel of your palms completely over the eyes to smooth puffiness and minimize dark circles

Step 3. Cheeks: Move your hands to the cheeks on either side of your nose. This helps release excess fluid and reduce puffiness

Step 4. Chin and Jawline: Rest the chin on your palms with wrists touching

Step 5. Base of neck and ears: Apply pressure with the full weight of the head to help enhance drainage and refine facial contours

For each step, count 10 seconds before moving on to the next one.
